How do footballers find clubs without an agent?

Most professional footballers move without an agent acting for them. In 2025, an agent represented the player in only 15.3 per cent of international transfers. Without one, players rely on coaches and teammates from their own league, direct messages on Instagram, and their own professional record being visible somewhere a club actually looks. The constraint is not talent, it is reach.

What actually works, in order

Teammates and coaches from your own league. This is the real network and it is the one that produces moves. A coach who has managed against you knows what you are, and coaches move clubs constantly. A former teammate who has landed somewhere is worth more than a hundred applications, because his recommendation carries a reputation with it.

Direct contact on Instagram. Unglamorous and it works, because the people making decisions at this level are reachable and there is no gatekeeper. A short message with a link to your record is a legitimate approach. A message with nothing attached is not.

LinkedIn, but manage your expectations. It is where football administration lives rather than football recruitment, so the people who answer are rarely the people who decide on players.

Trials, with your eyes open. Of the international trials registered with FIFA in 2025, more than eight in ten involved players aged 18 or under. At professional level a trial is mostly for players who are unproven or carry a risk the club wants to see for itself, so if you have a professional record, a trial is often a step backwards rather than forwards.

What to be careful of

There is a part of this market where players are asked to pay to be seen: for a trial, for an introduction, for a place on a tour. Sometimes that is an honest cost of travel. Often it is not, and the tell is simple: a legitimate route asks you for your record, not for your money.

Why being out of contract is not the emergency people think

Contracts in this market are short. About half of the contracts signed in international transfers in 2025 ran a year or less (FIFA). That means a very large share of professionals are out of contract every year, as a matter of routine rather than of failure, and FIFA's data reflects it: 62.5 per cent of international transfers in 2025 involved a player whose contract had expired.

You are not in an unusual position. You are in the normal one, competing with everyone else in the same position, which is why being visible in the weeks that matter decides more than anything else.

The thing that does the work

Whatever route you take, it ends the same way: someone at a club looks at what you have actually done. Not a highlight reel, which every player has, but minutes, the level of the leagues you played them in, and what kind of player those numbers describe.

If that record is a PDF somebody made two years ago, it will not survive the first question. If it is read from the public sources clubs already check, such as league records and match statistics, it answers the question before it is asked.

Questions people also ask

Can I sign for a club without an agent?

Yes. Most transfers happen without one acting for the player. You may want legal advice on the contract, which is a different service from representation.

Do clubs take unsolicited approaches seriously?

They take a credible record seriously. The approach only has to get it in front of them.

Is it worth paying for a trial?

Almost never at professional level. If somebody is charging you for access, ask what they are actually selling.
