How do football agents find clubs for their players?

Most football agents find clubs through their own contacts: sporting directors, coaches and other agents they already know. They send a player's profile and video to clubs that might need his position. The hard part is knowing which club needs that position, at that level and salary, right now. Posted requests put that in writing.

The usual routes

  • Calls and messages to sporting directors and coaches the agent already knows.
  • Other agents, who share positions they cannot fill with their own players.
  • Sending a player's profile and highlights video to clubs that might need him.
  • Following a club's results, injuries and departures to guess what it will need.

Why it is hard

Clubs below the top tier rarely publish what they need. An agent who sends a striker's video to ten clubs usually does not know which of them is looking for a striker, at what level, or for how much. Most of those messages get no reply.

The market is also thin on agents. In 2025 a player's agent was declared in only 15.3 per cent of international transfers, and about one in six licensed agents acted for a player in an international transfer that year (FIFA Football Agents Report 2025, p. 21).

What works better

  • Find out what the club needs before you propose: the position, the level, the salary and the contract length.
  • Check your player against the club's rules first. A proposal that misses a must-have wastes the club's time and yours.
  • Keep the player's record easy to check, with a profile built from his public record and a recent video.
  • Use posted requests, where clubs write down the position and terms and agents propose against them.

On FTBL Exchange, agents see the positions clubs are trying to fill, with the salary and terms written down, and are emailed when a request fits one of their players. It is free for agents, with no fee per player.

Questions people also ask

Do I need a FIFA licence to propose players?

FIFA licensing applies to agents acting in transfers. On FTBL Exchange, FIFA licensed agents, intermediaries and scouts can all register, and each is labelled as such to clubs.

How much do agents earn on a placement?

Usually a share of the player's contract value rather than a transfer fee. Our article on agent fees covers it.
