How do clubs judge a player's level from another league?

Clubs judge a player from another league by asking how strong that league is compared with their own, then looking at his minutes, age and role, his statistics, and video of him against good opponents. Numbers from a much weaker league count for less. Regular minutes at a similar or stronger level count for most.

Start with the league

The same output means different things in different leagues. Clubs compare league strength first, using rankings, the results of a league's clubs in European competition, and where players move to and from. A player stepping up a level needs stronger numbers than one moving across.

Then the minutes

Minutes show trust. A player who started most matches at a decent level is a safer signing than one with good numbers off the bench. Look at the last two seasons, not a single good spell.

Then the data and the video

  • Statistics per 90 minutes, compared with players in the same position.
  • Success rates, such as duels won and passes completed, not only totals.
  • Full matches against the strongest opponents in his league.
  • Age: a younger player at a level can be expected to improve.

Check a level for free

FTBL Exchange publishes its own calculation of league levels, and anyone can check a player's level from his Transfermarkt link at ftblx.app/check. On a request, a club can set a minimum level, and agents see whether their player meets it before they propose.

Questions people also ask

Do goals in a weaker league count?

They count for less. Clubs adjust for the league's level, so strong numbers in a weaker league are a reason to look, not a reason to sign.

What is the most reliable sign a player can step up?

Regular minutes at a similar or stronger level, backed by video of him doing well against the best teams he has faced.
