How many professional footballers are there in the world?
FIFA's Professional Football Report 2023, the latest edition, counted 128,694 professional male footballers at 3,986 clubs across 135 countries. That is roughly 32 professionals for every professional club in the world. FIFA counts anyone on a written contract paid more than his expenses as a professional, so the figure can include players on very low pay.

The ratio that decides careers
A squad is finite and a window is short. In 2025 FIFA recorded a record 24,558 international transfers in men's professional football, and 62.5 per cent of them involved a player who was out of contract.
Where those players are
Registration is heavily concentrated. A handful of countries hold a disproportionate share of the world's professionals, while many federations have only a few hundred. The consequence is a permanent flow of players from markets that produce more professionals than they can employ toward markets that import.
Why the number is bigger than the visible game
The professionals you can name play in perhaps a dozen competitions. Most of the rest play in leagues few broadcasters carry and data providers cover in less depth. They are not amateurs. They are professionals whose careers depend on somebody knowing they exist.
