How do you sign a free agent footballer?
To sign a free agent footballer, a club agrees personal terms directly with the player or his agent, because there is no other club to pay. No transfer fee is due. The club then registers him with its national association, usually in a transfer window, though free agents can often be registered outside one.

What a free agent is
A free agent is a player whose contract has ended or been terminated, so no club holds his registration. Most moves in football are of this kind: in 2025, 62.5 per cent of international transfers involved a player who was out of contract (FIFA Global Transfer Report 2025, p. 10).
Step by step
- Decide what you need: the position, the level, the age range, the salary (net or gross) and the contract length.
- Find candidates: through agents you know, your coaches' contacts, video, or by posting a request agents and players can answer.
- Check the record: his last club, his minutes over the last two seasons, any injuries, and whether his contract really has ended.
- Watch full matches, not only a highlights video.
- Agree personal terms with the player or his agent: salary, bonuses, housing, flights and length.
- Register him with your national association, with the documents it asks for, such as the end of his previous contract and, for a move between countries, the international transfer certificate.
Can a free agent be signed outside the transfer window?
Often, yes. FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players let a national association register a professional outside a window when his contract ran out before the window that applies to the signing club closed.
The edition in force from 1 January 2027 spells this out as a contract that has naturally expired or been ended by mutual agreement before that window closed, and adds players whose contract was ended early by one side, subject to a quick check by FIFA (article 6). Associations must weigh the sporting integrity of their competition when they allow it, so check with your league before you agree terms.
What a free transfer still costs
No fee goes to another club, but the club still pays wages, any signing bonus, and often the agent's fee on the player's behalf. Training compensation can also apply for younger players moving between countries.
