How can a football club recruit players on a small budget?

A club on a small budget recruits best by planning early, writing down exactly what each position needs, and casting the net wide at no cost: free agents, loans, and agents and players who answer a stated need. Check every candidate's record and full matches before talking money, and keep a shortlist all season.

Plan before the window

  • List who is out of contract, who is leaving, and which positions need cover.
  • For each position, write down the level, age range, salary (net or gross), contract length and any passport rule.
  • Set the order: which signing matters most if money runs short.

Look where the value is

Most moves carry no fee. In 2025, 82 per cent of international transfers in men's professional football had no transfer fee (FIFA Global Transfer Report 2025, p. 7). Free agents and loans are the main routes for a small club.

Cast the net wide, cheaply

  • Tell many agents what you need at once, not one phone call at a time.
  • Post the position where agents and players can answer it.
  • Ask coaches at the clubs you play against which players they rate.
  • Look beyond your usual source leagues. Most leagues take most of their players from just a few places.

Check before you talk money

  • Minutes over the last two seasons, at what level.
  • Full matches, not only highlights.
  • Injury history and why he left his last club.
  • References from someone you trust who has worked with him.

Questions people also ask

Do we need scouting software?

Not to start. Data tools help judge a player, but on a small budget the bigger gain is hearing about the right players at all.

Is it free to post a request on FTBL Exchange?

Yes. There is no subscription, no commission and no fee per signing.
