What is a player passport in football?
A football player passport is a record of every club a player has been registered with since the calendar year of his 12th birthday, issued by his national association. FIFA also uses an Electronic Player Passport with his status, loans and club training categories. It decides which clubs receive training compensation and solidarity payments.

What it contains
Under article 7 of FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, the registering association gives the club a player passport showing the clubs he has been registered with since the calendar year of his 12th birthday.
The Electronic Player Passport adds his association, whether he was amateur or professional, whether each registration was permanent or a loan, and each club's training category. Associations must make accurate registration data available to FIFA.
Why it matters
- Training compensation is shared between clubs according to the time the player spent with each.
- Solidarity payments are split by the years each club had him between 12 and 23.
- A missing or wrong registration can cost a training club money years later.
