What is the solidarity mechanism in football?
The solidarity mechanism sends 5 per cent of a transfer fee to the clubs that trained the player between the calendar years of his 12th and 23rd birthdays. It applies when a professional moves during his contract and a fee is paid. The new club deducts the 5 per cent from the fee and splits it by years of training.

When it applies
Under FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, a training club gets a share when a professional is transferred, permanently or on loan, between clubs of different associations, or within one association if the training club belongs to another association (article 21 and Annexe 5).
It is a share of compensation paid for a player under contract. A free transfer pays no fee, so there is nothing to share.
How the 5 per cent is split
| Calendar year of the player's birthday | Share of the 5 per cent |
|---|---|
| 12th to 15th, each year | 5 per cent |
| 16th to 23rd, each year | 10 per cent |
A club that had the player for part of a year gets a pro rata share. Training compensation paid to the former club is not counted in the fee the 5 per cent is taken from.
Why it matters to small clubs
A club that developed a player as a teenager can receive money years later when he is sold on. Keeping accurate registration records, which feed the player passport, is how a club makes sure it is counted.
