What do clubs look for in a football highlights video?

Clubs look for what you do in your position, against a decent level, recently. A good highlights video runs three to five minutes, opens with your best clips, marks you clearly before each clip, and shows the actions your position is judged on. Include a full match link, because clubs know highlights hide the rest.

Length and order

  • Three to five minutes. Most people stop watching well before ten.
  • Your best five or six clips first. Many viewers never reach the end.
  • A title card with your name, position, age, club, league and season.
  • Mark yourself before each clip with an arrow or circle, so nobody has to search for you.

Show what your position is judged on

PositionWhat a club wants to see
GoalkeeperShot stopping, crosses, one on ones, distribution with both feet
Centre backDefending one on one, headers, covering runs, passing out from the back
Full backDefending wide, recovery runs, crosses, overlapping
MidfielderReceiving under pressure, passing forward, winning the ball back
WingerBeating a man, end product, work back
StrikerFinishing, movement in the box, holding the ball up, pressing

Mistakes that make a club stop watching

  • Music louder than the action, or slow motion and effects.
  • Clips from youth football or several seasons ago.
  • Only goals, for a defender or a midfielder.
  • Poor footage where you cannot be identified.

Full matches matter

Highlights show your best moments. A club that is interested will want a full match to see your positioning, your work without the ball and your mistakes. Have one or two ready.
