What is a free transfer in football?
A free transfer is a move between clubs where no transfer fee is paid, usually because the player's contract has ended and no club holds his registration. It is the most common kind of move: in 2025, 82 per cent of international transfers in men's professional football carried no fee. The player and new club still agree wages.

Why most moves are free
In 2025, 62.5 per cent of international transfers involved a player whose contract had ended, and 82 per cent carried no fee at all (FIFA Global Transfer Report 2025, pp. 7 and 10). Below the top division, a stated fee is rarer still.
Free does not mean costless
- The new club pays wages, often a signing bonus, and usually the agent's fee.
- Training compensation can be due if the player is under 23 and moves to another country.
- The player's former club is owed nothing for a player out of contract.
Timing
Out of contract players can often be registered after the window closes, which is why free transfers keep happening into the season. Our article on transfer windows and free agents explains the rule.
Pre-contracts
A player in the last months of his contract can agree to join another club when it ends. Under FIFA's rules a professional is free to sign with another club only once his contract has expired or is due to expire within six months, and a club must tell his current club in writing before it negotiates with him (article 18). Check national rules too.
You should not need an agent to be seen.
